What Would Our Heroes Think?

As a child I idolized individuals like Audey Murphy and Alvin C. York. These ordinary men who became bigger than life when put in positions of great harrowing danger. Their hearts and what they stood for, really meant something to me as a child and helped very much in the establishing of my American self. Over the years my youthful vigor for the American way of life has been crushed by what I have seen my nation become, and finding out really, that it has always been this way. Rich men doing the bidding of rich men while those without continue going without. I love Audey Murphy because he helped fight against a war mongering society bent on having its greedy hands into everyone's business. What exactly does the United States do every single day in this modern era of ours? We war monger, and have our hands in everybody's business, that's what we do. We have become the very monster that my heros of youth fought against, and that makes their incredible deeds utterly heart breaking. Alvin C. York bent his and twisted his soul 180 degrees to put a bullet through the skull of a great many human beings, for what? I guess my heros did what they did because what they were doing was what they believed to be the right thing to do. The reason they did it, I did it, and we have all been played as fools. Rich folks provide the ammo, and poor folks do the bleeding. What I didn't know when men like Audey Murphy and Alvin C. York were shaping me, was that a profession of killing makes the devil out of you any way you slice it. I think our heros would think that we need to do a lot more thinking.
